Why your Company Should Go Green

Whether you manage a small company office or you’re the CEO of a major corporation, you’ll be interested to know that “going green” can improve your bottom line.  New research has found that companies that adopt eco-friendly green practices have employees that are more productive than those that do not.

One study, done by Magali Delmasan, environmental economist at UCLA's Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, examined data from 5,220 companies showing that on average, employees at companies that observe eco-friendly practices were 16 percent more productive than average employees.

Why Does Going Green Improve Productivity?

The research seems to indicate that the boost in productivity is related to employees viewing green companies as a positive work environment, which, in turn fosters better cooperation between workers. Employees in green firms tend to be more motivated, receive more training and benefit from better interpersonal relationships, further adding to the productivity boost. The research also found that green employers are viewed more favorably by investors because of links to effective management practices and cost-efficient practices, such as “paperless” offices and Cloud-based Electronic Content Management (ECM).

So, while going green is generally touted as being good for the environment, going green is also proving to be good for your business.

Green Changes with the Biggest ROI

While there are many small changes that can be made immediately in your office to make it more green – things like optimizing the energy settings for computers and other devices; recycling; adjusting your thermostats by two degrees; and allowing work-from-home options when possible – there are larger changes than can provide substantial ROIs, not only in energy savings, but also in improved efficiency.  Most experts agree that going paperless and moving into the Cloud will have the largest impact on your company’s efficiency and bottom-line, while turning your company into a veritable “green machine.”

More Work, Fewer Resources, Less Energy

Why does a move to the Cloud have such far-reaching effects?

While we may live in the “digital age,” for most office workers, “paperwork” remains the mainstay of their daily grind.  All that paper for all the paperwork comes from trees.  Even if your office is careful about recycling your used paper, and buying recycled paper for printing, most sheets of paper get used once then tossed.  The greenest paper is no paper at all, so keeping things digital saves a lot of trees and paper processing.

While keeping those digital files on your in-house network saves paper, storing them in the Cloud makes even more “green” sense.   With a Cloud-based ECM, your organization can reduce in-house IT costs reduce resources and address information security and workflow processes.

Cloud ECM

The more you do online in the Cloud, the less you need paper and the more efficient (green) your office becomes.  When your employees can access the files they need 24/7, from any geographic location, they can be more productive, and environment-saving telecommuting becomes a reality.  When automatic workflows ensure that documents get where they’re supposed to be, when they’re supposed to be there, efficiency improves.  Audit trails enable you to manage your employees, even when they’re working remotely, so you stay on top of the work that’s being done.  Compliance issues are handled automatically, so you spend more time improving your business and less time making sure legalities are met.

All of this information responsiveness, scalability, and agility make Cloud ECM the efficient “green” solution for most organizations, regardless of size or structure.  Green practices are not detrimental to a business, but rather improve ROI.
